When Mallory Rock local Gwen Ferris reached out to me about her sister Beth, who recently died, I couldn’t help but think of Cora Reaver. Mallory Rock is this little island off the coast of Maine. I was on vacation years ago and I spent the day there wandering around their little town. The locals were nice enough, if not a little odd.
I had a few drinks waiting for the ferry back to the mainland and this older gentleman (he must’ve been in his 90s) started chatting me up! Turns out he was the retired Chief of the MRPD. We started exchanging war stories before he got a little quiet. Then, he told me about Cora.
Cases find me all the time, even on vacation. This job will follow you.
According to the Chief, Cora Reaver’s death was officially ruled an accident (just like Beth’s), but he didn’t think that was true. For more than 40 years his gut rotted with that nagging feeling that something wasn’t right. There wasn’t much for me to help with; a cold case from 1979 probably won’t be solved, but I did feel his pain. He still carried Cora’s file with him and he shared some of her diary entries with me. I took pictures and I’ll be sending them to you.
Because I have that feeling. I think understanding Cora Reaver will help you find out what happened to Beth.
